1933 Chicago Bears

NFL Champions

For the first time, the NFL was split into divisions, and a championship scheduled for the team in each division with the best winning percentage. The Bears, with the best winning percentage, hosted the New York Giants at a foggy Wrigley Field.

The Bears opened the scoring with a pair of Jack Manders field goals. The Giants' Harry Newman threw a 29-yard touchdown to Red Badgro to close out the first half's scoring.

Manders' third field goal of the day put the Bears back on top, but the Giants answered with a long drive capped off by a 1-yard TD run by Krause. The Bears finally took the ball into the end zone on the ensuing drive, as Bronko Nagurski found Bill Karr on the other end of an 8-yard pass.

The fourth quarter began with a wild play as the Giants' Ken Strong took a handoff on the Bears' 8-yard line and ran to the sideline, but unable to advance past a wall of Bears, lateraled to Newman, who likewise was unable to find daylight, and lost several yards before throwing into the end zone, where Strong's catch and the subsequent kick gave the Giants a 21-16 lead.

Later in the fourth quarter, an 8-yard punt by the Giants gave the Bears the ball across mid-field. Three plays later, with the Bears at the Giants' 33, Bronko Nagurski threw a pass to Bill Hewitt, who ran for 14 yards before lateralling to Bill Karr, who ran in for the game-winning score. A Carl Brumbaugh kick sealed the win, 23-21.
